To be completely honest, the key to successful relationships is at your fingertips. Literally. Take a moment and think about the three following actions:

  1. Shaking hands with an acquaintance
  2. Sending a followup email days after you recently connected with someone
  3. Dialing a phone number and calling a person who you haven’t spoken with in a while

While these three actions seem extremely basic, they’re often the hardest steps in building a successful relationship. I get it, we’re all busy. But it’s necessary to follow these three actions similar to those that we perform on a daily basis (I hope!). I’m referring to the directions on the back of a shampoo bottle: rinse, lather, and repeat. We can all agree that those are relatively simple directions, correct? And we all follow them, right? The Power of Networking

I often hear people say “it’s not what you know, rather it’s who you know.” As I recently landed my first job out of college through the power of networking I have taken this phrase to heart. The story that I’m about to tell is a textbook example of how networking can pave a successful path. All you have to do is execute effective networking.

Last year during my summer internship I attended an intern event. There were representatives from different business units who shared their insights with approximately 100 interns. Since my role during that summer was managing Leadership Development training sessions with little focus on e-Business or Marketing, I jumped at every opportunity to reach out to such departments that touched on these fields. One of the representatives at this event was from our subsidiary company and happened to be in a marketing role. I would have reached out to her at the end of the event, but was unable to speak with her. As soon as I returned to my desk I sent her an email expressing my interest to speak with her about her role and how she got there. The Art of Networking

With the present state of economy we are facing the worst job market since the Great Depression. I can’t stress enough the importance of networking. We are currently living in a time where it is more important who you know, rather than what you know. I am not underestimating one’s knowledge, however it is valuable to network and reach out to others. Think about the following situation, you are a business owner of a large sales company and you are looking to hire a new account executive to manage your sales accounts. You are faced with two possible options:

  1. Try to hire the best possible candidate through job postings, hiring a recruiter, and other forms of selecting the best candidate.
  2. Reach out to a few of your peers (David, Betty, and Marie) that have a large network and have affiliates with the neighboring universities where you can find an excellent candidate that is approaching graduation.

Which option would you choose? I personally would rather hire a potential candidate from the recommendations of David, Betty, or Marie.
