Constructing Your Own Online Brand


When most people are asked to think of a brand they think of the larger companies such as Apple, Coach, Honda, or others that come to mind. It is not as common for individuals to think of themselves as a brand. With an endless amount of free resources available online it is time for individuals to start viewing themselves as a personal brand. Whether you are a student, a marketing professional, or a local plumber, it is time that you effectively make use of these tools to leverage your personal brand. For example, say you are an unestablished plumber named Herbie, and you are trying to make a name for yourself. As a starting point you should purchase your own domain name to reserve space for yourself online. For the purpose of this entry the assumption is that you choose herbietheplumber as your domain name. Once you have reserved this space it is important to go ahead and create accounts using the various social networking tools using this unique name. Some of the accounts that you would then go ahead and create are as follow:


By creating these accounts you would be able to build your own brand online and provide your current customers and potential customers with valuable information that they can’t find elsewhere. On your YouTube channel you would post videos with information of how to cut back on your water bill by installing a certain type of washer, as well as demonstrating other tips for the general public. In addition to this medium you would post tips on your Twitter and Facebook accounts and grow your brand. It is also extremely important to create a blog where you would be able to write articles demonstrating your knowledge and expertise within your industry. All of these tools would direct users back to your website as this is considered the “homebase” for your online presence.

Creating these accounts would establish your identity online and the greatest thing is that these don’t cost you an arm and a leg. You would be able to construct your own brand online and as long as you are maintaining these mediums and dedicating time to these efforts people will start to recognize your services. They will think of you as “the plumbing guy” and will refer to you when they are faced with a dilemma about their shower, hot water heater, or other plumbing problems.

The most important aspect of creating a brand online is the following. You must acknowledge where your target audience is and to be honest these days everyone and their mother is online. As we move into the future, more and more time will be spent online. With this in mind it is extremely important to go ahead and establish an online presence. So remember, whether you are  a student, a marketing professional, or Herbie the local plumber, the time is now to construct your own brand online!
